Summer time Dance Competition Season Is in Full Swing


Summer time dance competition season is heating up throughout the nation—and the pond. Right here’s what to look out for.

American Dance Competition

DURHAM, NC  Following performances by Ballet Hispánico, Hung Dance, Ronald Ok. Brown/EVIDENCE, Baye & Asa, Doug Varone and Dancers, Kayla Farrish, and Les Ballet Afrik in June, American Dance Competition bookends a busy July with Netta Yerushalmy’s competition debut (MOVEMENT, July 2) and Paul Taylor Dance Firm in a trio of its founder’s classics (July 26–27). In between are ADF-commissioned premieres from Dom-Sebastian Alexis, Iyun Ashani Harrison, Gavin Stewart and Vanessa Owen, Stacy Wolfson and Curtis Eller, Milka Djordjevich, and ShaLeigh Dance Works; the ADF debut of Shay Kuebler’s Radical System Artwork; City Bush Ladies in Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s SCAT!… The Advanced Lives of Al & Dot, Dot & Al Zollar; and extra. Jacob’s Pillow Dance Competition

BECKET, MA  Among the many multitude of dance artists making the pilgrimage to Jacob’s Pillow Dance Competition this summer season shall be The Royal Ballet, which takes over each the indoor and outside phases for its weeklong Pillow debut—and with a brand new work by Wayne McGregor amongst its provide­ings. Camille A. Brown & Dancers additionally premieres I AM, impressed by an episode of “Lovecraft Nation.” Multi-day engagements mark the Pillow debuts of Social Tango Challenge, M.A.D.D. Bates Dance Competition

LEWISTON, ME  Aretha Aoki and Ryan MacDonald kick off the efficiency collection at Bates Dance Competition with the premiere of IzumonookunI, impressed by the founding father of kabuki and that includes the couple’s 7-year-old daughter. Sean Dorsey Dance returns to Bates to present the native premiere of The Misplaced Artwork of Dreaming, and Shamel Pitts’ TRIBE affords BLACK HOLE — Trilogy and Triathlon. New this summer season is an invitational dance battle that includes breaking, hip-hop, and home dancers, moderated by Shakia “The Key” Barron and Duane Lee Holland Jr. July 12–Aug. 2. batesdancefestival.org.

Vail Dance Competition

VAIL, CO  The always-starry Vail Dance Competition boasts eye-catching debuts amongst its eclectic choices this summer season, together with artist in residence Sara Mearns in Martha Graham’s Clytemnestra, American Ballet Theatre stars Catherine Hurlin and Aran Bell in Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, and New York Metropolis Ballet’s Roman Mejia’s first Apollo outing. Michelle Dorrance places on a full night celebrating the historical past and development of faucet dance (July 31), whereas the Colorado Dances program (Aug. 4) showcases Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Colorado Ballet, and DanceAspen. All of it culminates within the NOW: Premieres program Aug. 5, with new works by Kyle Abraham, Dorrance, Lauren Lovette, Justin Peck, Tiler Peck, artist in residence Jamar Roberts, and Pam Tanowitz. Edinburgh Worldwide Competition

EDINBURGH  The Scottish capital bursts on the seams each August, however a trio of dance gems might be discovered on the Edinburgh Worldwide Competition this 12 months.
